Knee Pain
June 3, 2010
There are many causes of knee pain. This post is to help you understand a few possibilities and to give you some at-home care ideas. Please consult a professional before attempting the care to be sure that you have a proper diagnosis and can safely perform the exercises.
As a Chiropractor trained in extremity care, I am capable of diagnosing knee problems or referring you for imaging like MRIs. Above is my video some of the common structures of the knee that cause knee pain.
Obvious one-time trauma (like a car accident or sport injury) may cause you meniscus tears, ACL, PCL damage or other sprain/strains.
Chronic wear and tear can cause tendonitis, bursitis and chondromalacia patella.
Vague knee pain, or pain that changes location: Muscle imbalances around the knee (hamstrings, quads, calves, etc.) may be causing this type of pain. In this case, I will write you a prescription for physical therapy to make sure you get stretching and strengthening training to correct your imbalance.
The type of knee injury you have will greatly dictate which type of treatment is your best option. After a full examination, I will discuss your options with you which include:
Chiropractic to help alignment and function
Massage to help balance and lessen inflammation
Physical Therapy to strengthen and balance
Injections to decrease inflammation
Surgery to correct severe injury that will not respond to conservative care
Foam Roller exercise to decrease knee pain.
